Instagram Expands Controls Over Sensitive Content

Instagram has announced the expansion of its Sensitive Content Control features, which it first introduced in July, giving users more control over their in-app experience.

Previously limited to the app's 'Explore' section, Instagram will soon allow users to control the content they see across the board. Instagram's sensitive content controls offer three alternatives which are: Standard, More, and Less.

This will assist to decrease exposure to potentially harmful content in the app, which is a major concern for parents, especially given the amount of time their children spend online these days.

Instagram explains it this way:

“Starting today, the Sensitive Content Control will cover all surfaces where we make recommendations. In addition, to Explore, you will now be able to control the amount of sensitive content and accounts you see in Search, Reels, Accounts You Might Follow, Hashtag Pages, and In-Feed Recommendations. With this update, we’re also applying the technology we use to enforce our Recommendation Guidelines to Instagram’s recommendations on Search and Hashtag pages. This update will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.”

“Standard” is the default state, and will prevent people from seeing some sensitive content and accounts. “More” enables people to see more sensitive content and accounts, whereas “Less” means they see less of this content than the default state. For people under the age of 18, the “More” option is unavailable.”

The epidemic has exacerbated this, with young people compelled to go online to maintain social connections and involvement. Parents cannot watch what their children are doing all of the time, but any precaution that helps them avoid the worst of the internet is a plus, as they try to avoid the confusion and danger that comes with it. On this front, parental controls are also useful, and Instagram implemented new parental control tools in December of last year.

Sensitive content filters are another feature that, while not specifically aimed at children, may provide further assurance for parents.

One incorrect search may quickly lead you down the wrong path, so having these extra safeguards in place will help you prevent seeing unexpected and unpleasant visuals on your screen. It's another significant move for Instagram, which is still working on new technologies to protect users from bad experiences.

You may change your Instagram Sensitive Content Controls by following these steps:

  • Go to your profile.

  • Select the 'Settings' tab in the upper right corner.

  • Select 'Account.'

  • Select 'Sensitive Content Control'.
